Our Story
Helping Business Owners Turn Today’s Work Into Tomorrow’s Wealth
You built your business for a reason. At Adair Advisory Group, we help you connect that daily work to a bigger financial picture, from tax planning and cash flow to retirement income, investment strategy and the future sale or transition of your company.
Our work is especially focused on small business owners who know their business has value, but may not yet have a clear plan for how that value becomes personal wealth. Whether you are still growing, starting to think about an exit, or wondering what retirement should actually look like, we help you organize the moving pieces and make decisions with the next stage in mind.
Know Your Business's Enterprise Value
Every business has an enterprise value — a number that reflects what it is actually worth today, separate from the income it pays you this year. Most owners run the business on income alone and never stop to measure that number, or the gap between it and what they will actually need to walk away financially free. We call that the wealth gap, and it is far easier to close the earlier you start paying attention to it — long before you are anywhere near ready to step back.
Virtual Planning Built For The Way You Work
For a business owner, time is the one thing you cannot get back. Being 100% virtual means you are not losing half a day driving across town for a meeting — you get focused, efficient conversations that fit around running your business, not the other way around. Documents, scheduling, and ongoing check-ins all happen securely from wherever you are, so staying on top of your financial plan never competes with staying on top of your business.
Tax Planning Is Not An Afterthought Here
For many business owners, tax planning is where better financial decisions begin. We look beyond tax preparation to help identify strategies that may affect compensation, retirement plan design, business expenses, investment accounts, Social Security planning and the eventual transition of your business. That may include conversations around reasonable compensation, accountable plans, solo 401(k)s, retirement contributions, business cash flow and how personal and business decisions interact. The purpose is not simply to file a return. It is to help you make tax-aware decisions that support the wealth you are trying to build.
Meet John H. Adair, CPA, MBA
John H. Adair, CPA, MBA is a financial advisor and tax strategist who built Adair Advisory Group around a single idea: business owners deserve one advisor who handles both the tax side and the financial-planning side of their lives — without having to repeat themselves in two separate offices.
Before the credentials, John came up in the trades. He started in electrical contracting at Benfield Electric and later moved into general contracting — he is no stranger to tools, and he spent years in the field doing the actual work before being recruited into the office to handle estimating, collections, project management, and dispatch. He knows what it means to run a job, manage a crew, chase a payment, and figure out where the money went at the end of the month.
He also spent time at a major Wall Street wirehouse as a financial advisor with UBS PaineWebber, so he understands what the big firms offer — and chose to build something more personal and more integrated instead.
From there, John spent years in healthcare finance, IT, and analytics at Johns Hopkins Health System and Anne Arundel Medical Center — work that was deeply financial, from system-level performance down to the individual cost center. He built budgets, analyzed financial and operational data, and benchmarked Johns Hopkins against academic medical centers across the country, presenting findings to everyone from the C-suite to the operators running things on the ground. It taught him how large, complex organizations actually make and lose money — and how to explain what the numbers mean to anyone, at any level. He has also taught undergraduate and graduate economics courses.
John holds a CPA license, an MBA from Johns Hopkins University, and the Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA) designation, and is a member of the Exit Planning Institute. He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy.
His approach is direct, practical, and built around fit. He helps business owners see the whole picture — tax strategy, business planning, retirement income, personal wealth, and the eventual transition out of the business — coordinated through one relationship, with one person who has actually been in the field.
Frequently Asked Questions About Adair Advisory Group
Adair Advisory Group is a virtual, advisory-first firm led by a CPA and financial advisor. We bring tax planning, financial planning, investment management, and business and exit planning into one coordinated relationship — so your business, personal finances, retirement, investments, and taxes work together instead of in separate silos.
Adair Advisory Group works especially well with small business owners who want to think more intentionally about tax planning, retirement income, business transition, and long-term wealth — particularly owners who may eventually sell or transition their business but haven't yet built a strategy around that outcome. The firm also works with individuals and families navigating complex financial decisions — retirement income, Social Security and Medicare timing, and tax-efficient withdrawals — who want coordinated tax and financial guidance from a single trusted advisor.
A business can become personal wealth when the owner plans ahead for valuation, taxes, cash flow, retirement savings, succession and the eventual sale or transition of the company. Adair Advisory Group helps owners look at the business as part of their broader financial life, not as a separate asset disconnected from retirement and personal goals.
Business transition planning should begin well before you are ready to retire or sell. Starting earlier gives you more time to improve the structure of the business, address tax issues, build retirement income strategies and make decisions that may increase flexibility when the time comes to step away.
Yes. Tax planning is a core part of the firm’s approach. Adair Advisory Group helps clients think through tax-aware strategies related to compensation, retirement plans, investment accounts, business expenses, cash flow and long-term planning decisions.
