Tips for Individuals Earning Income from Hobbies

Tips for Individuals Earning Income from Hobbies

July 11, 2023

Many individuals generate income from their hobby activities. However, it is important to note that reporting rules for hobby income differ from those for income derived from a for-profit business. Unlike business income, hobbyists are not eligible to deduct their hobby expenses.

A hobby is defined as an activity pursued for personal enjoyment without the intention of making a profit. To determine whether your activity is classified as a business or hobby, it is necessary to consider the following nine factors:

  1. The activity should be conducted in a business-like manner, and meticulous and accurate books and records should be maintained.
  2. The amount of time and effort invested in the activity should demonstrate an intention to make it profitable.
  3. Your livelihood should not depend on the income derived from the activity.
  4. Any losses incurred should either be beyond your control or within the normal range for a business in its initial stages.
  5. Adjustments to operational methods should be made with the aim of improving profitability.
  6. Both you and your advisors should possess the necessary knowledge and expertise to conduct the activity as a successful business.
  7. A history of generating profits from similar activities in the past is a favorable factor.
  8. The activity should generate a profit in some years, and the extent of profitability should be considered.
  9. The expectation of future profits resulting from the appreciation of assets used in the activity should be taken into account.

It is important to note that no single factor holds more significance than the others. If you receive income from an activity pursued without the intention of making a profit, it is mandatory to report this income on Schedule 1, Form 1040.
